I had the absolute honor of spending Jessica's wedding day with her and her daughter Sylense, getting ready to tie the knot!!! They are 2 beautiful ladies inside and out and did I mention great style:) Jessica picked a hairstyle that was side swept with pincurls sweeping across the back and the best part were the awesome peacock feathers we put in! Leftover Films and the 48 hour film project!!!

I have to say, this was one of the funnest projects I've ever had the chance to work on! I'm thinking I see more film work in my future:) I think what made it such a blast was we had such an awesome team of professionals working on the project. The film makers were Bryan and Tracy Coward from Tampa Wonderworks and the photogs on the job were Mariana and Khaled from Kismis Ink Photography. Lots of other incredible talent joined them to put together our film Fugitive Hunters. The competition will end this thursday evening and we will find out if our film wins the competition, so cross your fingers!!! Even if we don't win, it was well worth it, what a blast I had with all involved!! Thank you for letting me use my talent and be creative!!! You all rock!!! Her are some photos of my hair and makeup work transforming the actors/actresses into characters, soooo fun:)

We always love receiving "love notes" in the mail from past brides and clients. A very sweet one came yesterday from Joanna, who was married to Scott in June at the Vinoy Resort in St. Petersburg. What a beautiful venue and what a stunning bride inside and out!! Hope and myself enjoyed spending the wedding day styling Joanna and her bridesmaids and lovely mom. Thank you Joanna for having us out, the pleasure was all ours!!

Summer Wedding Makeup

Looking at blogs today and came across this one, in which I totally agree with the advice for brides that is given here (check below). For summer makeup Bronze and Golds are a fabulous way to punch up the neutral tones worn by many brides without feeling over dramatic or too bold. We recommend a black liquid liner along with some false lashes (which can be done very natural) to make the eye the stand out feature. To tone down the eye, use neutral browns and add a pop of bronze on the inner corner of the lid. Use pencil liner instead of liquid which will give a more subtle look. Be sure to use a stronger lip color if toning down your eyes. As you always need a standout feature!! Be sure to add some bronzer to the face and a nice shimmer highlight on top of the cheekbone above your blush to give you that sunkissed look. Here is an example of a bronze/gold beachy look we did this week on the gorgeous Adrianna.

I'm fortunate in my line of work to get to do hair and makeup for some pretty fun people. Erica and Katelynn of Occasions Weddings and Events are definitely two of those people!! I had a blast styling them for their company photoshoot with the amazing Mariana and Khaled of Kismis Ink Photography!!! We did airbrush foundation on the ladies and a fun lighter purple on shadow on Erica and a pink shadow look for Katelynn. Both were wearing some fun false lashes and we set Katelynn's hair for some softer bouncy curls and flat ironed Erica's for a sleeker look. Ladies the you look fabulous and Kismis Ink, beautiful work as always!!

Local photographer and friend Jessica Leigh asked me to do some makeup for her and her husband's anniversary shoot!! Any chance to get my hands on one of my friends and do a little makeup is an easy "yes"! She wanted something natural looking, but also a little more makeup than she normally wears. I definitely think at first I freaked her out with the amount of makeup that was on her eyes, however after she saw the photos of herself she thought it looked great! This just demonstrates how professional photos are much different from a regular camera and a little more makeup than usual comes out stunning in the pro photos. Thanks to Zekeshem (love that name) with Blue Lane photography for the adorable pics. of Jessica and Justin. You guys are too cute...congrats!!

This had to be one of the most unique and fun weddings I've worked on to date! Jessica and Wade had a Alice in Wonderland themed wedding at Bok Towers in Lake Wales. It was adorable and I had a fabulous time styling Jessica with a vintage larger pin curl hairstyle and giving her a beautiful black smoky eye. We couldn't have asked for a better bridal party then Justeen and her ladies! They were so much fun to work with and not to mention tall and gorgeous. Most all of them were friends from playing volleyball together. Marissa and I had such a great time styling their hair on Justeen's big day. There were some great vendors at this wedding and as always it's a pleasure to work with them. Missy of Duncan Photography did a beautiful job on the photos and our favorite local makeup artist, who is not part of Collective Creations, but we highly recommend her, Jess Waldrop, did a stunning job as always on the makeup. I just love the these two ladies, so when they asked me to do their hair/makeup for there very fun business shoot with Lifelong Studios, of course I said yes!! She is a local gown designer making a big splash and name for herself around Tampa Bay and the world. With her premiere wedding dress collection for Fall 2010 and website released, Collective Creations had the honor of being part of the stylist team for the models on her collection shoot! We helped put together a themed look for this collection and decided on Old Hollywood Glamour! So up our alley!

Isabella's Ball

Sometimes we get asked to do something that would be defined as "giving back"! But what we find is that while we are giving back we are really getting far more in return than we could ever give! Isabella is a special little girl who has Ostegenesis Imperfecta. For her 5th birthday, and a first one out of a hospital, Confetti Events along with Cindy Stonehouse Events & More threw a beautiful winter fairyland ball for her and her family and friends. Wow!! Is all I can say!! They did an incredible job and Marissa and I had the complete honor of styling the girls hair! It was truly a blast! All proceeds benefited shriners and OI foundation. Thanks again for having us out, we couldn't have been touched more by this special little girl!

Dillards Bride!!

So I had the opportunity to work on one of the most different weddings I've ever done. Most of you probably heard already about the couple who said their vows right inside of Dillards at the Wiregrass Mall!!! Kim and Owen both work at Dillards, Kim at the MAC counter (my favorite!!) as the sales manager and Owen in the shoe department. He proposed to her in Dillards and the rest is history, or shall we say Dillards history! They were the first couple to ever get married inside a Dillards store and I was surprised at how elegant it all was! This past saturday, I was asked to do a makeover party for a very cool birthday girl! The theme was disco and you gotta love a girl who loves to dance and sing at the top of her lungs. The girls were a fun crowd and I had a great time giving them party styles and fun makeup for their disco night! I knew they were gonna be a fun crowd when I asked them who their favorite singer was and in unison they all answered "Taylor Swift"! She has fabulous hair! Ok, I couldn't be more excited about this!! I recently teamed up with my fabulous sister, who happens to be one of the most talented makeup artist I know. to do some very creative work!! It was a ton of fun and the lovely models were amazing for each part. The theme of the shoot was the 7 days of Creation!! We have completed the first 4 and stayed tuned for Part 2 in the near future. Just wanted to say a big Congrats to Kelly and Jeff on tying the knot yesterday! I was honored to do the bride's hair and makeup and the flower girl. They rented a beautiful 3 story condo on Treasure Island beach and were married on the back veranda over looking the ocean. I actually stayed to watch some of the ceremony and it was a very beautiful time. Thanks for having me out Kelly, the pleasure was all mine!

Hair tip for beach weddings: Because often times the beach can be somewhat windy, I often suggest to wear your hair pulled back. If you opt to leave your hair down, it is a good option to have the front pulled back and secured in some way as to not constantly be pushing hair from your face.

Trash the Dress Contest Winners: Trent and Julie

You may remember seeing a post for a Trash the Dress contest that I was involved with, with 4 other vendors. Well the winners were Julie and Trent and they were incredibly good sports. Especially Mrs. Julie who was brave enough to even get in the pond in her wedding dress...alligators and all. Ok, we had people looking out for gators, but she did get a spider crawling up her dress! Brave girl! Julie requested that we add a braid in the front to keep the hair out of her face and even if her hair got wet it would stay and look nice, and of course I was up for that:). Braids are actually very trendy and popular right now for all hairstyles from casual to classy! I had a blast and thank you to Julie and all the incredible vendors I had the opportunity of working alongside for being so creative, talented and fun! Oh yeah, 10 Connects News was even there to see what was going on:)

Despite the lack of blogging I have been staying very busy these days. Olika and I had the privilege of doing Karen and her ladies makeup for her beautiful wedding in Clearwater. It was an absolutely gorgeous day and we had so much fun with the girls. They all wanted fake lashes!!! Congratulations to Nicole and Andy!!

A big Congratulations goes out to Nicole and Andy who were married Friday the 19th of June at the Rusty Pelican! I had the pleasure of styling the bride and bridesmaids hair, along with the mother of the bride and grandmother also. The bride had a tossled curl to her updo that gave a more of a beachy style to the updo, but still very elegant and glamorous. The bridesmaids had a very sleek low side pony with a beautiful gerber daisy for accent. It was so nice to work with them. I had so much fun the other night at The Perfect Wedding's Guide Industry Appreciation Party! I always like a good party and this one's theme was Denim and Diamonds! I enjoyed meeting a ton of new vendors and because I'm relatively new to the industry (although I've been doing weddings on the side for years) I probably enjoyed it even more than some:) Here are just a few pics. from the night. This past monday I had a blast at the Premiere Hair Show in Orlando. It's always great to see all the new fabulous techniques and coming up trends. You see alot of crazy things too, which is always amusing. I was able to see on the main stage some of the greats in hair, Nicholas French (my new hair hero), who is a runway stylist. Nick Arrojo, who you may have seen on what not to wear..I even got to do a haircut I learned from him on my wonderful mom when I got home..too fun!! And of course, last but not least the always amusing and amazing Martin Parsons, master of updo's! Can't wait to try out all I've learned!! Here are some pics I took from the day:)

I did the updo for the bride who was had been married for a number of years already, but never had professional photos taken in her wedding gown due to her photographer at the time becoming very ill. So it's official!! I'm never going to be a model, but I did have the chance to be one for a recent shoot for a trash the dress contest. I definitely have a new found respect for all you models out there, it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. However, I was pleased that my dress still fit, 5 years and 2 babies later:)! The contest is being put on by Tampa Wonderworks and Confetti Events and will include everything from pictures by Carrie Wildes Photography to flowers to hair (by yours truly) and makeup. As you all know I love the glamour! So the Red Carpet Glamour Event I participated in recently was right up my alley! I got to style the ladies hair, my dear friends Tamara Whittaker and Jessica Leigh did the makeup and pictures. For $30 you could get all done and a free 8x10 with the opportunity to purchase more! Brow before Beauty

Eyebrows are something to think about before your wedding or special event. You want to make sure you have a nicely shaped brow that compliments your face and eye shape. You never want to get them wax within a day or too of your event. Make sure to do it about a week in advance just in case their should be any over waxing or dislike in the shape. Typically I would recommend not waxing your brow for the first time the week before the event. If it's your first time waxing, threading, tweezing, etc. Make sure to start the process at least a month ahead (if you have that kind of time). This will give sometime to assess the shape and before the final shaping. So make sure you shape your brow for a beautiful offset to a complementary makeup application! Recently I got a call from Shon who needed her makeup done for a fashion shoot she was doing! I had so much fun chatting with her while doing her makeup! Even though she said she was a little nervous to meet someone new to do her makeup, when she finished she was "pleasantly surprised" as she put it. We agreed that we mastered the look she was going for, for her shoot.

The Results Are In...

So the results are in....and I absolutely love my new do! It's exactly what I was looking for! It's easy to style, which saves me on time, and being a business owner and a wife and mother of 2 little one's I need all the time I can get! It's versatile, I can reinvent my look with this cut. And last but not least it's short! Just what I need for alot of swimming with my kiddos on hot summer days! Thanks to Amy at New Identities for giving me a fabulous new do! And sorry Olika (my usual stylist) for cheating on you this one time... I'm so sorry you were sick and unable to cut my hair...also I'm sorry for being the impatient, impulsive person I am and deciding I had to get it done that day. I love you and will never do it again...unless you get sick again:)J/K
Oh, and last but not least...thank you to my amazing 3 year old daughter for being such an incredible photographer and taking this lovely picture of your mommy!

Changing Styles

I am absolutely ready to finally cut off the long hair I have been desperately wanting to grow out. Summer is approaching and I'm getting busier and need an easy style that looks professional. With that said, if you are thinking of changing your style I would ask you "please wait!" At least until your big day is over and then go for the chop the funky color or just any change in general. You risk so much when you do a dramatic change before your wedding day or any other big day you may have planned. It may come out fabulous, but what happens if it doesn't. The risk is far greater doing it before hand. So just hang on a little longer! But I can't so thursday I will be chopping my hair in a fun, short style because I'm ready and I have no big events planned! I will post the new do after thursday:)

Cross Creek Ranch Visit

So yesterday I took a drive out to Cross Creek Ranch to check it out. I have events coming up in the future there and wanted to meet the staff and see the ranch! It was beautiful! It is set on 10 acres of land with a stream and amazing old oak trees. They have a bed and breakfast pictured here which is decorated adorable and a rustic, elegant stable that they use for reception, parties, dinners, etc. They host anything from baby showers, church events, to weddings and parties. It's all located in Valrico and I highly recommend you check it out for you next event. The staff is very friendly and goes out of there way to make the event spectacular! They even have horses!! The Back Up Plan

I have many brides that have had there weddings here in Florida, but have planned them from another state. Whether the bride is moving here permanently or just having a destination wedding, I highly encourage a back up plan for everything. You never know what can come up last minute, so it's handy to keep names and phone numbers of a few back up hairstylist/makeup artist, photographers, florists, etc. just in case! Keep these things together in a folder or notebook that is easily accessible at all times. You just might need them at a moments notice. I came across a bride recently who was getting married out of state and was having her hairstylist come with her, however the hairstylist had to cancel for personal reasons and she had no back up plan. Now she was going to a small town in another state that she was very unfamiliar with, with no one to style her hair. This is the kind of problem you don't want to run into weeks or sometimes days before your wedding, so just keep some extra names and numbers on hand when in a pinch.

Return of the Bride Photoshoot

So I recently got to work on a very fun shoot for an amazing local wedding photographer who wanted to put a new look to her business. Carrie Wildes of Carrie Wildes Photography and Zaida from Z photography teamed up to create a new look for the face of Carrie Wildes Photography. They had the idea to put Carrie in her wedding dress to show that she has walked in the "shoes" of the brides she shoots weddings for. We decided for hair and makeup to go for a little more edgy look than what Carrie normally wears. We added some amazing lashes, straigten her usually curly hair and added some striking highlights for a bolder look. Jana from Events in Bloom created a beautiful arrangement for the shoot and the location they chose was Ybor, which always makes a cool background for any type of photos. For those of you who were not aware A Hair Affair provides a fun alternative for the younger ladies. Whether it's a birthday party or just a get together for any special occasion, we provide glamour girl makeover parties for ages 6-12. Each girl will recieve a hairstyle of her choosing and a makeup application. A vast assortment of nail polishes are provided for the girls to paint there nails and adorable pink and white spa robes are provided for use during the party. The party can also include a customized cd, favors for the guests, invitations, thank you's, before/after photos, and/or a gift for the girl of honor. Packages are listed on the website, but we are flexible in working with your budget.

So what exactly is a trial run and how does it benefit you?
Well, a trial run is basically a practice round to prepare for the real deal. Whether wedding, prom, performance or any other very important event where you want to look your best, I highly recommend a trial run. You should book this practice round at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance, as to have enough time to tweak or change anything if needed before the big day.

These trial runs are beneficial in a number of ways.
1. It helps to determine likes and dislikes before a final decision must be made.
2. It helps you to get to know the person and feel comfortable with in which will be styling you for your big day.
3. It provides a level of expectation for you and comfort in knowing what you can expect.
4. It allows time for changes to made to hair or makeup before the final decision must be made.

If you are unable to schedule a trial run before your big day for any reason, don't panic!
There are few things I suggest you do to help insure comfort and fulfillment of expectation on your day. First, ask to see pictures of the stylist work that you're thinking of using. Second, send pictures to the stylist of yourself and what you are hoping to achieve with your hair and makeup. Third, don't set your expectations on one particular style, be flexible and open to suggestions. If you do these things it will help you and your stylist to feel comfortable.

When a special occasion arises and you are coordinating your makeup to your attire, it is important to follow a couple guidelines when going for an elegant, yet somewhat bolder look than your daily makeup wear.
First, make sure your eye color is coordinating with your clothing. It does not have to be the same color as your clothing, but should not clash with the color of dress you have chosen. Example: If you are wearing a blue dress, choose a brown or a coordinating blue shadow (or both together).
Second, your lip color should be in contrast to your dress and eye color, but must coordinate at the same time. Example: Blue dress, blue eyeshadow, a more neutral with a touch of pink lipstick would contrast, yet coordinate.
Third, one area of the face needs to overpower another. If you do a bold shadow, down play your lips with a more neutral or calmer tone. If you go for a bolder, brighter lip, soften the eyes with lighter tones.

When choosing a wedding hairstyle is is important to asses what look you are wanting to achieve. In my opinion, it is important to look through magazines, books, or pictures online to help you determine your look. While important to gather pictures, do not set your sights on one photo in particular. It is up to you and your stylist to achieve a look that works with your facial shape and features and your hair thickness, color and length. All these things are very important factors in the style that you choose. If you are focusing on one photo that you just have to have, you may be disappointed to find that hairstyle just may not be the best on you. Your wedding is an important event and you want to look your best. Allow help from pictures along with your friends, relatives and especially your hairstylist to achieve a look that suits you and sets you apart from the bridal party.

A Little Bling

When it comes to a formal event hairstyle, whether it's a full updo, partial style, or you decide on leaving it down, it is always in fashion to accesorize. There are many different ways you could display some bling in your hair. Smaller jewels throughout the hair are popular and come in a variety of colors for any occasion. These accent your style, but don't over emphasize any particular area of the hair. If you decide on a barrette or larger jeweled peice, make sure you only use one signature peice. This makes a bolder statement and draws attention to that area of the hair. You can also go with a few smaller jeweled barrette's which looks very elegant when placed near each other in a down style or partial updo.
Whether it's your wedding, prom or just a party, glam it up this is not your typical everyday event! It's a day for putting a little bling on and making a statement!

Rachel and James

I'd like to congratulate Rachel and James on their marriage. The couple had a Christmas inspired wedding that was very elegant. I had the opportunity to style the bride and her maid of honor's hair and makeup. The styling took place at the mother of the bride's home and it was a beautiful day, so we actually did hair and makeup on there amazing lanai area over looking there pool and golf course. It was fun, relaxed and completely enjoyable! The photos here were taken by the amazing Carrie Wildes of Carrie Wildes Photography and the whole event was planned by the incredible Jessica and Lori or Simply Divine Events. More than a Wedding!

As a hairstylist and makeup artist who specializes in formal events, I'm looking forward to creating a blog to provide tips and that special day help with those important questions you may have concerning your hair and makeup. Also, to provide examples of the work A Hair Affair does and track our progress. And to connect you with other vendors who may be able to help you with your journey. Being my first blog, you may find this next paragraph a little strange for a hairstylist and makeup artist, but then again I may not be your typical stylist!
Like many of you out there, as a little girl I always dreamed of what my wedding day would be like. The flowers, the cake, the dress, the hair and makeup, the beautiful pictures, and all the little details. However important these things are, (and I do think they are important!), the connection to a wedding that foreshadows all of these things is the one with the special person who you've decided to spend the rest of your life with. I feel in a fast-paced, money driven society this most important aspect of marriage is being lost. A wedding ceremony is done to signify the unity of the two spending forever together, it was never meant to be a show. The details of a wedding (hair, flowers, etc) are a way of personalizing a wedding to highlight the significance of the act of marriage, not a way to bring attention to the cost of the event.
There is nothing like attending a wedding where you feel so inspired by the individual's taking their vows. To feel the love in the room and be surrounded by it is a true blessing from God. No flowers, cake or beautiful dress could replace this. While the all important details are fun, they should always follow in a far second to the meaning and significance of the covenant of marriage. My hope and prayer for all of you is that in the journey to the wedding of your dreams, you would find your dream of marriage far more fulfilling! 1Cor. 13
